Brief History: The first ashram was set up in May 1915 at the Kocharab Bungalow of Jivanlal Desai (about 10km from here), who was an advodate companion of Gandhi. It was given the name of Satyagraha Ashram. Mahatma Gandhi needed to complete exercises like cultivating and creature farming and required more space. In 17 June 1917, the ashram was moved to a space of 36 sections of land on the banks of the waterway Sabarmati.
